Duration: 8 weeks followed by 3 Practical demonstrations in the APIARY from mid APRIL to early May (Probably all on Saturdays)

 

Course Content:

Types of BEES. Honey bees, why keep bees?
How does the colony work?
The individual bee.
Different type of bees.
Role of honeybees in fruit and plant pollination
Equipment: choosing a hive,Frames and foundation, assembling hives and frames.
Choosing an apiary site.
Protective clothing, Smokers, hive tools and record cards.
Swarming, why it takes place and ways to try and manage for a favourable outcome.
Hive types including housings,frames,wax and the assembly of same
Management of bees including winter and spring feeding and treatment to prevent diseases.
